Class Officer Program
***This is important information and will be linked to the sidebar****
This year in third grade we will be holding quarterly elections for three class officer positions. To run students must give two speeches at least five sentences long on why they should be chosen for the position they are running for. Just like a real election, we will first hold a primary, which will consist of any students who would like to participate, and then the top two vote-getters will compete in a general election.
The positions are President, Vice President, Secretary. Following are the jobs which will be undertaken by each position:
President- take attendance, lead fire drill, check homework (am and pm), , keep other officers on task
Vice President- take lunch count, announce school menu for the day, fire drill back-of-line, check homework (am and pm)
Secretary- check homework (am and pm), update homework blog, run errands
There will also be a fourth, teacher-appointed Helper position, which will run errands, check homework (am and pm), and take care of the class equipment.
Each nominee’s speech will need to consist of a topic sentence, two-three supporting sentences, and a closing sentence. It does not need to be memorized. They may not campaign in any way other than that. There will be no “Vote For Me” anything handed out or hung up. At the start of each quarter we will hold elections for the quarter’s officers.
Students speeches must be practiced at home to ensure the best possible performance in class. They need to keep their speech by their waist, eyes mostly on the audience, speaking in a clear, measured voice.
This program allows students to experience public speaking and the election process, as well as encouraging the “students helping students” philosophy I would like to have in our classroom and teaching and personal self-sufficiency.
